Thanks Ma’am

A few weeks ago I had an odd thing happen at work, well not odd, just something I hadn’t dealt with before. As I’ve mentioned before I work in IT for a large company. I was asked by an individual if I could help get some software installed. A few days went back and I checked back in to see if the software got installed. I got a response via email that read… YES MA’AM!

When I read those words I was a little taken back. It still stings and resonates harshly in my brain. I don’t get any miss or ma’ams anymore. The only time people use female pronouns are when I’m around Family or people I’ve worked with for many years. I’ve been at my job for 12 years, maybe 13,  now.  So those that I’ve worked with for a long time usually say she then correct themselves. No big. But when I got this it was odd. This was a guy who wasn’t around before I transitioned.  So perhaps you can see why it struck me so.

Today I get into work and this same guy shows up at my desk. He says, I have 2 questions for you. 1 work related and 1 semi personal. OK, I said, what ya got. He then begins to apologize for the email he sent. He says he did it without thinking and he was sincerely sorry.  Then he shared a story with me, he told me about how one day he wore nail polish to work. He then proceeded to experience a huge backlash; people laughed at him, made comments about his masculinity, things like that. He then started sharing with me how he doesn’t like to express his gender as masculine, he straight but doesn’t feel like he fits the masculine mold. This made me giddy inside; I absolutely love when people, outside of my queer bubble, share this information with me. We then had a conversation about the gender spectrum and how crazy gender is. How it fucks with people when you don’t fit a mold.

Later on in the day a former co worker who isn’t in my building too often was sitting at my supervisor’s desk. My supervisor shared with me that while sitting there this old co worker kept referring to me as she. My supervisor set her straight, to which she then inquired why I wanted to go by Male pronouns. She took it all in stride and then said, that’s awesome! I feel so grateful that these situations happen, I love these conversations. I love seeing people’s minds open.
